Contenu
The Old Testament was most influential in Old English literature and the stories therein captured the imagination of the Anglo-Saxon poets. Multiple interpretations (allegorical, literal or historical) were available to the writers. The selection of matter by the poets for their narratives is telling enough; the style of narration (dramatic, tragic, or heroic) attests further the creative freedom of the poets. The variety and richness of the reponse of the Old English poets to the Old Testament will be demonstrated in the works to be studied in the course of the seminar as we read poems about the Creation and the fall of the Angels, as well as those entitled Judith, Daniel and Exodus. As part of the literary analysis we will examine modern translations alongside the original Old English version.
