This seminar pays particular attention to two of the Middle English alliterative poems attributed to a fourteenth-century anonymous author, the so-called Gawain-author. We shall discuss the rich thematic structure of both texts. Pearl is considered as one of the greatest medieval allegories, while Cleanness draws heavily on biblical narratives imaginatively set in a medieval English setting.
