The context of the composition and production of Beowulf remains a mystery: to what extent is the poem a celebration or condemnation of pagan heroism? This seminar will provide an opportunity to study the narrative digressions which take us from the exploits of the hero into a complex web of themes, themes which lead us to visions of human weakness as well as superhuman strength. In addition, by examining related texts, we will explore the Germanic, Old Testament and historical and legendary background of the poem.
