This seminar will focus on melodrama, a genre which has played a particularly important role in American culture since the 18th century to the present. The course will examine several theories of melodrama, its association with women, its production of "sympathy" or empathy between reader and text, its seductive moral clarity, and the impact it has had on the political and cultural history of the United States. We will begin with Susanna Rowson's best-selling Charlotte Temple (1794), explore the complex phenomenon of Harriet Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin and its racist antithesis, the film Birth of a Nation (1915), discuss the Cold War as an instance of ideological melodrama, and finish by looking at the way melodrama figures in contemporary social issue films such as Philadelphia.

Texts will be distributed in class.
