Contenu

This seminar is open to 3rd year BA and second certificate students, as well as postgraduate students. Note that students will be expected to have attended Ute Heidmann's 'Introduction à la littérature comparée' in the Winter semester.

This interdisciplinary and bilingual (French-English) seminar will focus on Angela Carter's intertextual dialogue with Charles Perrault in the twentieth century. Carter first translated Perrault's tales into English, and then went on to rewrite them in her famous collection of 'stories about fairy stories', The Bloody Chamber (1979). As we will show, however, the dialogue is not limited to these two writers and their specific historical, linguistic and cultural context, but it also involves other authors, translators and editors who have explored and exploited the fantastically rich semantic potential of fairy tales in the past centuries. Our examination of the circulation, transmission, reception and transformation of Perrault's tales in european literary history from the late XVIIth c. to the second half of the XXth c. will use a comparative method which goes beyond a theory of influence to analyse and discuss the work of two important writers and account for the rich and complex inter-cultural dialogue that they illustrate.
