Contenu
This course will take as its texts poems and prose from Anglo-Saxon England in which the central figure is female. The texts to be studied include extracts from Beowulf, two Old English elegies, The Wife's Lament and The Husband's Message, Judith, Cynewulf's Elene and Juliana, and Ælfric's prose homilies and saint's lives. The aim of the course is two-fold: firstly, to explore the representation of women in Old English literature and to investigate how this reflects the "reality" of the social conditions of Anglo-Saxon women and early medieval attitudes towards women; secondly, to explore modern responses to these literary texts.
Bibliographie
A course booklet with original texts and translations will be distributed at the beginning of term.
