Contenu
This seminar considers the interface between words and images in Books of Hours, illuminated manuscripts, Psalters, sermons and lyric poetry, from the medieval period to the early modern period, comparing the vivid and profusive use of images of the former to the post-Reformation anxiety about images which afflicted writers of the 16th and 17th centuries. Apart from anonymous medieval texts, authors will include: Julian of Norwich, Richard Rolle, Margery Kempe, John Donne, George Herbert, Richard Crashaw.
