The end of the fourteenth century in England was marked by an ecclesiastical crisis which saw the birth of Lollardy, the first English heresy, and an increased interest in personal religion. Both phenomena were intimately linked to the increase of vernacular literacy among lay people. This seminar aims to understand late medieval English culture by paying close attention to some of the key religious texts of the period.

Set Text: The Book of Margery Kempe, ed. Barry Windeatt (London: Longman, 2000). A reader with Lollard texts will be provided.
