Romance was one of the most popular genres of the medieval period. Chrétien de Troye made the matter of Britain the most fashionable material with his own narration of the deeds of the Knights of the Round Table, such as Lancelot and Gawain. Although the matter of Britain also attracted much attention on the part of British authors, the matters of Rome, England and France was also used for the making of Middle English romances. We shall explore the genre by a consideration of several romances, among them Havelok, Sir Launfal, The Awntyrs off Arthure at the Terne Wathelyne andThe Sege off Melayne.
