This is a survey class introducing students to the principal movements and schools of literary and critical theory. Topics covered include Formalism, Structuralism, Psychoanalytic Criticism, Marxism, New Historicism, Feminism and Post-Colonial Theory. The textbooks for the course are Literary Theory: An Anthology and Literary Theory: A Practical Introduction, both edited by Julie Rivkin and Michael Ryan. You may purchase them at Basta!. We will be focusing on three primary texts during the course of the semester: Shakespeare's The Tempest, Joseph Conrad's The Heart of Darkness, and selected poems by Emily Dickinson. (You may want to read the first two in advance over the summer). The course is designed to expose students to the main terms and issues of twentieth-century literary theory with an emphasis on current approaches. Students will be asked to formulate written and oral responses to both primary and critical texts, and to learn to test them against each other for a better understanding of both. Progress in the course will be evaluated through three short written tests spaced out during the semester.
