Contenu
This course is designed to familiarise students with the history of Literature in the British Isles during the period ca. 800 AD - 1485 AD, which therefore includes both the 'Old English' or 'Anglo-Saxon' and the 'Medieval' period. You will be asked to read weekly extracts of relevant texts that will then be discussed in class, with a particular attention to the changing cultural, social and political contexts in which the literature was produced. The survey thus aims to give students a sense of the evolution and history of early British literature and culture, to familiarise them with the variety of the literary genres that the period has produced (epic, romance, lyric, drama, chronicle, elegy, satire), and to introduce them to the central themes of Old and Middle English literature (heroism, love, Christian morals, mysticism, chivalry, sacred history, political history, social criticism).
Evaluation
Validation interne: test in class in the last week of each semester (autumn and spring). Students will choose to answer 6 questions out of a possible 10. Short answer format.
