This is a survey class introducing students to the principal movements and schools of literary and critical theory. Topics covered include Formalism, Structuralism, Psychoanalytic Criticism, Marxism, New Historicism, Feminism, Postcolonial Theory, and Eco-Poetics. The textbooks for the course is Literary Theory: An Anthology, edited by Julie Rivkin and Michael Ryan, which may be purchased at Basta!. Other readings will be posted on the Moodle site for the course. This course is designed to expose students to the main terms and issues of twentieth-century literary theory with an emphasis on current approaches. Progress in the course will be evaluated through two short written take-home tests in the middle and at the end of the semester. This year (2011) there will be a special focus on "decolonization theory" with a guest lecture and workshop by Prof. George Hartley from the University of Ohio. Mark your calendars: Friday, Dec. 2nd will be the date of the obligatory workshop with Prof. Hartley.

The required textbook, Anthology of Literary Theory, is available at Basta! and you can purchase it already.

Later in the semester, you will need to buy Gloria Anzaldua's Borderlands/La Frontera.
