This will be a Master's level seminar focusing on American texts that could be labeled either American Gothic or fantastic, such as Edgar Allan Poe's work, Henry James The Turn of the Screw or Toni Morrison's Beloved. It will also be a course on genre theory and the way in which genres are defined, constructed and revised according to critics' needs and disciplinary trends. In other words, we will be thinking about the theoretical basis of genre study as well as the specificities of the so-called "gothic" and so-called "fantastic." Authors will include: Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Poe, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Henry James, Lovecraft, Flannery O'Connor, Toni Morrison.

Validation will be based on a midterm assignment, a final essay, and an oral presentation.

James's Turn of the Screw and Morrison's Beloved have been ordered at Basta! The other texts will be available on Moodle after the beginning of the semester.
