Acquiring the requisite skills for analysis of poetry in English, learning specificities of understanding African-American poetry.

This second year seminar has two objectives: one is to develop students' skill in reading and understanding poetry in English, and the second is to familiarize students with the specific issues and forms that characterize African-American poetry. On the one hand, we will be learning the vocabulary and reading strategies necessary for an informed appreciation of any English poetic expression, and on the other hand, we will be exploring how African American poets have positioned themselves in dialogical relationship to a literary culture that did not recognize black writers as fully authorized to speak until very recently. We will also explore the importance of oral and musical performance in African American poetry and the many innovative poetic forms these have generated. Finally, there will be a trip to Paris organized during the semester in order to explore the history of African American artists, writers and musicians in the French capital during the 1920s and 30s and the emergence of a diasporic (pan-African) race consciousness. Sign-ups for this trip will begin in October 2011.

Midterm, final essay, group discussion

Authors we will cover in the seminar will include Paul Laurence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Richard Wright, Amiri Baraka, and Ntozake Shange.
