Women are vividly represented in Chaucer's corpus. Their role is often crucial to what Chaucer has to say and he seems to have developed a sensitivity towards the feminine that is quite surprising in an age when misogyny is the norm. After considering the cultural context in which Chaucer is writing, we will discuss several texts written by Chaucer, such as 'The Prioress's Prologue and Tale', 'The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale', 'The Clerk's Prologue and Tale', Troilus and Criseyde, Book 1, and extracts from The Legend of Good Women.

Students will be assessed by means of active participation and the submission of an essay
