Objectif
The goal of this seminar is, first of all, to learn about the terms and issues involved in literary analysis of the novel: narrator, protagonist, point of view, direct and indirect and free indirect discourse, plot, narrative, structure, irony, imagery, figurative language, foreshadowing, genre, and so on. Another equally important objective is to familiarize you with some of the issues and terms of African American literature, such as "signifyin,'" the politics of vernacular & dialect, and the question of social responsibility. The final goal of this course is to prepare you for the 2nd year written exam (for those who choose to take it in literature), and so we will be doing extensive close reading of selected passages.
Evaluation
In order to validate the course, students will need to write two short essays (a midterm of 2-3 pages and a final essay of 6-8 pages), and lead a group discussion during the course of one class session.
