This 3rd year BA class aims at introducing students to the tradition of war literature in America since the late 19th century. The United States has engaged in military actions almost without a break for the last century, and militarism remains a key element of national self-definition, as does, paradoxically, the conviction that America is a peace-loving nation which resorts to violence only in self-defense. The literature of war and combat reflects this and many other paradoxes, contradictions and ironies. We will survey key texts including Stephen Crane's Red Badge of Courage, stories by Civil War veteran Ambrose Bierce, Ernest Hemingway, Kurt Vonnegut, Tim O'Brien, and Gustav Hasford. Two books are already available for purchase at Basta!: Crane's Red Badge of Courage, and Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. You can also read Gustav Hasford's The Short-Timers online by googling the author and title (this is the book that served as basis for Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket).

Midterm assignment and final essay, and oral presentation or group discussion.
