Contenu

The course introduces finance as a communication context characterised by interconnected activity types (e.g. financial reporting, analysts conference calls, shareholders meetings, etc) which give rise to a complex system of intertwined discourse genres (e.g. letters to investors, annual reports, earnings announcements, merger prospectuses, etc.). Financial communication is driven by the demand of information from investors who need to reduce the uncertainty surrounding investment opportunities - the uncertainty being due both to the intrinsic incompleteness of information concerning the occurrence of future events, and to private, undisclosed, information available only to "insiders". Thus, financial discourse genres, being oriented towards the decision making of investors, are, for the most part, overtly or covertly argumentative. The course will examine the genre of financial news (and in particular financial newspaper articles in English, French and Italian) focusing on their argumentative nature.
