Objectif
Being able to discuss and analyze a text of literature in critical terms in order to develop one's interpretation and/or argument in an academic discussion and in an essay.
Contenu
This "explication de texte" seminar relies on a novel by Jane Austen in order to make students familiar with the tools and resources of literary analysis. Each session is devoted to an aspect of criticism which can be articulated in relation with Austen's Persuasion: narrative voice, free indirect style, dialogue, time and chronology, plot, characters, subjectivity, theme, figures of speech, parody and satire.... Students work by groups of 2 or 3 in class and are expected to hand in a 2000 word essay by the end of the semester.
Evaluation
Class participation (collective) and essay (individual)
Bibliographie
The seminar depends on students having each an individual copy of Persuasion (Penguin copies available from Basta) and on documents distributed in class and/or available from MyUnil.
