Power, Violence and Desire in Middle English Romance
One of the aims of this MA seminar is to introduce students to the genre of the Middle English romance. In fact, the texts chosen for our discussions all belong to the sub-genre of the Breton lay. As we shall see, scholars have not yet reached a consensus on these texts when discussing generic classification.
Middle English romances address a larger audience than the courtly audience for whom Chaucer and the Gawain-poet, among others, wrote most of their compositions. In doing that, they also challenge some of the fundamental values of medieval English society, such as courtliness, loyalty, love, marriage, family ties, religion, and relations with the other.
We will be reading six romances, focusing on particular aspects for each of them, by ways of student presentations and general discussions.
Set-text: Middle English Breton Lays, TEAMS, ed. Anne Laskaya and Eve Salisbury (Kalamazoo, Medieval Institute Publications, 1995).
Evaluation
Students will be assessed by means of active participation and the submission of an essay.
