Objectif

To strengthen and develop skills in analyzing American culture

Contenu

This course is an advanced MA seminar on American cultural studies, and assumes some theoretical bases such as those acquired in the Critical Approaches class or Introduction to New American Studies. The focus will be on the role of military death and martyrdom in discourses of national identity. The question that we will explore in detail is how the death of soldiers is translated into « renewed life » and « greater devotion » to the national cause and what role is played in this process by narrative and rhetoric. We will read a wide corpus of texts, historical, sociological and literary, in order to probe some of the paradoxes and questions raised by this issue. The historical frame of the course will be post World War II. Issues of race and gender will also be explored in relation to military service and combat death.

Evaluation

Validation will be based on a midterm assignment, a final essay, and an oral presentation.

Bibliographie

All course material will be provided on moodle. No textbooks need to be bought for the class but if you want a real copy (as opposed to a pdf) of the novels we will read (Gustav Hasford's The Short-Timers and The Phantom Blooper) you will need to order them from Amazon as used books.

You could also prepare for the class by looking at the following documentary, which is available on youtube: The Cold War (BBC--in 24 parts). Focus on the first episodes in particular.

We will be watching several films, including: The Atomic Café, The Bridges of Toko-Ri, Steel Helmet, Manchurian Candidate (1962), Sands of Iwo Jima, The Green Berets, Vietnam: In the Year of the Pig, Hearts and Minds, Full Metal Jacket.
