Objectif

Reading and analysing literary texts within the context of feminist criticism and/or gender. Studying gender constructions and representations within their historical contexts.

Contenu

By focusing on two works with the character of a courtesan at their centre, this seminar aims at understanding the norms of power and gender at play at the very beginning of the Enlightenment. Relying on two different genres - drama for Aphra Behn (1640-1689), fiction for Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) - , the works of authors belonging to two rather distinct political backgrounds (Behn was close to the nobility and sympathetic to a conservative definition of monarchy while Defoe supported the so called "Glorious Revolution" and a new balance of power between Parliament and King), The Rover and Roxana, nevertheless, issue comments about the double moral standard or women's lack of actual power that can be eerily similar. Reading The Rover and Roxana together will enable students to get familiar with two significant texts of the canon while relating gender constructions of the past with today's interrogations about inherited conceptions regarding equality or sexual freedom. Furthermore, focusing on two texts written at a key moment in the historical process of power definition, students will also be lead to interrogate the way gender is part of this process, regardless of the usual labels "conservative" or "progressive".
