Contenu
This course focuses on different levels of linguistic description and introduces students to methods for describing and analysing linguistic data. In this course we will explore a number of case studies that provide new insights into the pronunciation of English, syntactic structures and vocabulary. Some of the tools that we will work with are electronic corpora (e.g. The Corpus of Contemporary American English), software for acoustic analysis (e.g. PRAAT), and dictionaries (e.g. the Oxford English Dictionary online). Overall, this course aims at developing students' knowledge and skills with regard to the linguistic description of English.
Bibliographie
The accompanying literature will be made available electronically on MOODLE and will be specified at the beginning of the course. The course will be assessed on the basis of 'active participation'. In groups of 3-4 students, all the participants are expected to write a group paper (4000 words) that has to be handed in the last week of the seminar. In addition to the linguistic contents, this introductory course therefore provides students with practical information on how to do research and write a paper in English linguistics
