Strengthening skills in literary and cultural analysis. Learning about the tradition of American Gothic literature

This 3rd year BA class aims at introducing students to the tradition of the American Gothic, starting with Charles Brockden Brown and continuing up to Morrison's Beloved. We will be focusing specifically on the way the American Gothic explores ideological contradictions and tensions in American culture, performing subtle and indirect political critique, probing problems in the American body politic and social norms. Authors that we examine include Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott, and Toni Morrison.

Two take-home written assignments of 1500 words each, and oral presentation or group discussion. An extended essay option for 6 credits is possible.

Toni Morrison, Beloved ; Charlotte Perkins Gilman, « The Yellow Wallpaper, » Louisa May Alcott, « Behind a Mask, » Charles Brockden Brown, excerpts from Wieland, stories by Poe, Hawthorne and others.
