Objectif
Objective: This class will focus on Henry James's 1898 masterpiece The Turn of the Screw and it will propose an in-depth analysis of one of James's most mysterious, controversial and critically disputed novellas. Students will furbish their analytical tools on this challenging text, thus expanding on the work conducted in explication de textes classes. The class will also focus on different critical approaches that this text has elicited over time. The objective of the class is to come to an understanding and a personal reading of James's text and to confront it with various critical texts included in the Bedford Edition. This course will also be a first introduction to critical discourse and its interaction with literary texts.
Evaluation
Evaluation: Students will contribute a brief (c. 30-minute) oral presentation on one of the critical approaches to the text. The presentation will include the analysis of a short passage with the help of one of the theories; it will also propose questions to be discussed in workshops. The 3000-word final paper of the class will combine, compare or contrast at least two critical approaches. The final essay is due 15th June 2014 and must be uploaded on Moodle.
Exams: Please upload your enrollment sheet onto the Moodle site of the class. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT YOUR OFFICIAL ENROLLMENT.
