Contenu
This course investigates language usage in its socio-historical context, which a special focus on the effects of variables such as gender, age, social class, education, and region. We will take sociolinguistic approaches to language variation as a starting point and will apply the existing theoretical frameworks and methods to diachronic data. Some of the questions that we will be concerned with are - Why did language users adopt new forms? How did the change spread in the speech community? How did the speech community perceive new linguistic forms? How did the standard English language develop? In this course the focus will be on all levels of historical language variation and change, i.e. orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and lexicon.
