The aim of this cours/séminaire is to understand the conditions in which a gender informed discourse could occur at the time of the Enlightenment, that is, at a time when the liberty and progress of the individual became the cornerstone of humanist thinking but a time, also, when the "human being", whose rights and feelings were the objects of general concern, became an increasingly male-centered concept. This BA class will focus on two texts and two authors with a remarkable audience, if not impact, on the reading public of their time. Belonging to the so-called "bluestocking" circle - usually regarded as an eighteenth-century proto-feminist group -, Sarah Scott produced, with Millenium Hall, a utopia through which she could develop her vision of a community composed of free women, revealing to today's students, explicitly or by default, what kind of obstacles were likely to be encountered and negotiated at this politically significant moment. On the basis of Scott's understanding of the condition of women, we will then proceed to read Evelina, or the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World: Frances Burney's first (anonymously) published and hugely successful novel, in which the complexities and subtleties of narrative enabled her to produce a simultaneously ironic and romantic work of fiction.

Credits and grade depend on the active participation in class discussions and in the writing up of an individual essay (2'000 - 3'000 words).
