Contenu
This course introduces students to historical and modern dialectology, i.e. the study of regional variation in language. Special reference will be made to English and Scots. First, we will trace the development of dialectological theory and methodology, incl. an introduction to the Linguistic Atlas of Late Mediaeval English (LALME) and major dialect surveys. Second, we will focus on the design, implementation and analysis of dialectological research. To this end, we will pay special attention to a range of linguistic features that distinguish the major dialects of English. Apart from focusing on dialectology as a branch of linguistic theory, we will also consider the relationship between dialectology and other disciplines such as geography, sociology and social psychology.
