Contenu
This course focuses on language variation and change in the urban context, i.e. a research field known as urban dialectology. The increasing national and transnational mobility, which leads to encounters between many different dialects and languages in an urban setting, results in new linguistic practices. First, we will focus on dialect and language mixing in selected contemporary global cities, e.g. New York and London. We will consider criteria such as social class, stylistic differentiation, social networks and communities of practice. Second, we will take a closer look at the development of selected cities, particularly with respect to mobility and linguistic diversity amongst the population, in the past. In other words, we will apply the existing theoretical frameworks and methods to diachronic data and critically assess the application.
NOTE that this class starts in Week 2, i.e. on 23 September 2014.
