This course will examine contemporary British writer Jay Griffiths' recent work, Wild: An Elemental Journey, which has been credited as 'the first great nature writing of the twenty-first century'. In Wild, Griffiths travels to a wide range of locations across the world including the Arctic, the Amazon and the Australian outback, to explore the possibilities and the limitations of the idea of wilderness. In our close reading of the text, we will consider the representation of wilderness and humanity's relationship with it, and through Griffiths' own journeys, we will be examining the larger tensions which arise from defining the notion of wilderness, as well as considering what it has come to signify in the 21st century.

One essay; one in-class presentation

The edition required for the course will be Jay Griffiths' Wild: An Elemental Journey, London: Penguin, 2006.
