The aim of this course is twofold. It provides practical illustration of the features described in the "History of the English Language" course, which it is meant to complement, and it helps to provide students with the linguistic and cultural background necessary for the second-certificate literary seminars in medieval literature. The theme this year will be 'Exile literature'. Three text units will be studied: the Old English elegiac poems The Wife's Lament and The Husband's Message; extracts from the Middle English poem Pearl; and The Second Shepherds' Play, a medieval play from the Towneley cycle. The first and second texts will be photocopied and distributed, the third will be available from Basta.
