Contenu
Four poems, thought to be composed by one poet, are extant in the medieval book we call either 'The Gawain Manuscript' or 'The Pearl Manuscript'. During this seminar we will focus primarily on the two best known Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl, a romance and a dream vision. We will read about Sir Gawain's quest into unknown territories, both civilized and wild. Not only is his physical strength tested but also his chivalric and ethical codes of conduct. In Pearl, a consolatory poem that explores matters philosophical and theological, we will follow the narrator from his deep grief, as he mourns the loss of someone beloved and precious, to final acceptance of his state. We will also explore how the material context of these poems, bound together with Cleanness ('Purity') and Patience, can bring added dimension to our comprehension and interpretation of these texts. In preparation for the seminar, you can read both Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl in the original Middle English or in translation, and familiarise yourself with the language of the texts. In class, we will work with the texts in Middle English
