'Ennobling Love', used by Stephen Yeager as the title for one of his books, is a very useful term that encapsulates significant concepts linked to a particular medieval sensibility that has been partly lost. Love in the medieval period was not only a way of desiring and feeling, it was a way of behaving and a social ideal. Ennobling love is pervasive in both Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl, written in the West Midlands in the late fourteenth century by an anonymous author. The aim of this seminar is first to familiarize ourselves with the West Midland dialect in which these two texts have been written. We will then turn to the concept of ennobling love in order to understand better the tensions and conflicts which pervade both the colourful secular romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the moving religious poem Pearl.
