Objectif

Upon completion of the course students should
- have acquired knowledge of the basic concepts and tools relevant to the study of linguistics;
- be able to apply these concepts and tools to the English language;
- have gained a solid overview of the core areas that define the field of English linguistics.

Contenu

The course consists of two parts: lELL 1 (autumn term) and lELL 2 (spring term).

ln the autumn term (lELL 1), we will start our exploration of the English language by analyzing its STRUCTURE. We will first scrutinize the system of its speech sounds (phonetics and phonology), the internal structure and organisation of words (morphology), and the arrangement of words into phrases, clauses and sentences (grammar). We will also be concerned with the meaning of English words and sentences (semantics) and how those meanings are evoked in actual contexts of language use (pragmatics).

ln the spring term (lELL 2), we will explore different fields of linguistics, starting with (a) regional and social variation in speech (e.g. accents, dialects, social class, ethnicity, World Englishes), followed by a focus on (b) style, genre and practice in English writing (e.g. the language of newspapers, advertisements, literature). We will then engage with (c) English in communication and interaction (e.g. language and power, politeness, gender and sexuality, language and politics). Another aspect that will be covered is (d) the learning and teaching of English, i.e. language acquisition and English in education. Finally, a brief preview will be given to (e) the development/history of the English language (compulsory course in the autumn semester of the second year).

Evaluation

This course will be assessed by two written tests (validation interne), one of them at the end of the autumn term and the other one at the end of the spring term. These tests, which cover the contents of the respective terms, last 45 minutes each and take place during the time of the lecture.

In order to pass IELL, you need to receive a 4 overall, i.e. the average of your two test results.

There will only be one resit exam for the entire year. This resit exam will take place at the end of August 2016.
