Sociolinguistics is the study of language and society. This course introduces students to foundational concepts of language variation and change through the lens of dialectological and (variationist) sociolinguistic research. Students will engage with key studies to understand how factors such as age, sex, region, ethnicity, and social groupings can impact language use. They will develop an understanding of why such variation exists and of how people regard and respond to differences between varieties by conducting quantitative sociolinguistic studies on regional language(s).
