The aim of this class is to introduce students to Edmund Spenser's major work, namely his allegorical poem The Faerie Queene. Using Book III as an example, we will first of all address various aspects of the poem in general, such as its structure, the Spenserian stanza, meter and rhythm, as well as Spenser's initial intention in writing this poem. Then we will also address questions specifically related to Book III, also known as the Book of Chastity. These include, among others: the representation of gender roles and relations in The Faerie Queene; Spenser's use of allegory as a means to comment on and criticise Elizabeth I's court, and to retell historical events; as well as the intertextual relationships of Spenser's poem with past texts, especially with folk- and fairy tales.

Students who wish to validate the class as 'Explication de texte: prose' for 3 ECTS will have to submit a written essay of 3'000 words.
Students who wish to validate the class as 'Enseignement complémentaire' for 4 ECTS will have to do an oral presentation of 20 minutes and submit a written essay of 3'000 words.
Attendance and participation to discussions will also be taken into account in the evaluation of the class.
