Contenu
The poetry of the Victorian period is marked by an astonishing variety as utilitarian and industrial social models and growing urbanization have responses in the form of a keen nostalgia for the innocence and moral simplicity of past times as well as for the pastoral. An intellectual and self-conscious enquiry into the poetic form sits alongside playful and artful nonsense verse; the inventiveness of the dramatic monologue alongside more traditional forms treating moral and devotional themes. The material to be studied will include works of Tennyson, Robert Browning, Gerard M. Hopkins, Oscar Wilde, the young Thomas Hardy and W. B. Yeats, to name but a few, as well as female poets, such as Christina Rossetti and Emily Bronte.
Evaluation
1) Preparation and participation (reading the poems in advance and participating in the discussion). Each week, one student will be responsible for introducing and leading the topic of that session by offering close readings and suggesting areas that need further attention. The seminar-leader should supply a handout in advance, sending it to lucy.perry@unil.ch the Monday before class.
2) One essay of 1800-2000 words long, addressing one or two poems and combining close-reading with reference to three pieces of secondary criticism. Deadline for submission: 15th December.
