This course aims to introduce MA students to the basics of independent research leading to the writing of a mémoire in the discipline of English (including Medieval, Modern, American and Comparative Literatures, Gender Studies, and Linguistics).


Weekly sessions include:

Getting started; choosing a topic and supervisor; preparing a proposal; Reading and Notetaking; Writing and rewriting and rewriting and rewriting; how to work with manuscript sources; how to collect and interpret research data in linguistics; sociolinguistic ethnography; working with online literary resources; Methods for Modern Literary Studies; mémoire structure and methodology; preparing for the discussion de mémoire.


Requirements for validation (Pass-Fail) worth 5 credits: students will submit a portfolio including two assignments:

1. Mémoire proposal comprising:

a) description of materials and methodology (c. 1000 words). See assignment information for subject-based weeks for more indications regarding content and format.

b) Annotated bibliography / critical review (c. 1000 words): you should compose a bibliography of secondary criticism on a given subject (see Reading / Notetaking workshop for further information).

c) Proposed chapter plan

2. Reflective essay on your own reading and writing practices. (c. 1000 words)


Course material will be supplied in class and on the Moodle site.

Exigences du cursus d'études

BA in English; enrolled as MA student in the English Section; intention to write a mémoire in English, at the University of Lausanne.
