Objectif

This course aims to introduce MA students to the basics of independent research leading to the writing of a mémoire in the discipline of English (including Medieval, Modern, American and Comparative Literatures, Gender Studies, and Linguistics).

Contenu

Getting started; choosing a topic and supervisor; preparing a proposal; using BCU library resources; how to work with manuscript sources; how to collect and interpret research data in linguistics; using archival databases in literature; how to review criticism and compose an annotated bibliography; how to manage a research project; strategies for writing mindfully; preparing for the discussion de mémoire.

Evaluation

Requirements for validation (Pass-Fail) worth 5 credits: students will submit a portfolio containing 4 assignments:

1. Library-based research exercise and/or annotated bibliography of PRIMARY texts.
2. Annotated bibliography / critical review of major SECONDARY criticism.
3. A selection of 3 log-book entries, and 2-3 pages, reflecting on current/previous writing practices and evaluating them (strengths, weaknesses), assessing what they learnt from the session that they would like to use, how they plan to change or develop their habits, and what results they expect from this.
4. Synopsis and critique of a research paper, theatre performance, or other relevant academic event attended.

Course material will be supplied in class and on the Moodle site.

Exigences du cursus d'études

BA in English; enrolled as MA student in the English Section; intention to write a mémoire in English, at the University of Lausanne.
