Objectif

After successfully completing this course, student will be able to:
- understand the linguistic, social, and historical factors contributing to the development of varieties of English around the world
- describe aspects of the phonology and grammar of varieties of English
- engage critically with the (sociolinguistic) literature on World Englishes (describing variation, examining data and discussing findings in relation to existing work)
- demonstrate the relationship between data and theory
- discuss academic argumentation and research in an informal setting using visual aids (e.g. hand-out, PowerPoint slides, poster, whiteboard) where appropriate

Contenu

This course will give students greater understanding about the range of varieties of English spoken around the world, including their linguistic typology. We will discuss models for describing the use and spread of English; the features that distinguish different varieties of English; the results of language contact situations; the development of English as a global language; and the impact of literature, media, and the Internet. The course is primarily sociolinguistic in approach and is mainly focused on synchronic variation in the varieties under discussion.

Evaluation

This course will be assessed by a group oral presentation (30%) and an individual research paper (70%)
