Contenu
The medieval world puzzles modern subjects in many ways, but perhaps violence and its legitimation in many spheres of medieval life is one of its most disconcerting aspects. This seminar examines how violence was conceptualised. It focuses on secular and religious literature, more particularly on the deployment of violence as a performative act in genres such as romance, medieval drama, saints' lives and meditations on the Passion. The material under consideration reveals ambiguity concerning the nature of violence and brutality in medieval culture.
The texts will be provided as a reader (pdf document). They include, among others, two romances, Sir Tryamour and The Siege of Jerusalem, the play of the Massacre of the Innocents, extracts from Nicholas Love's Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ, and the Middle English Life of Elizabeth of Spalbeek.
