This third-year BA seminar considers the way in which Chaucer discusses and represents femininity throughout some of his most important literary productions. First, we will consider medieval misogyny in order to understand how Chaucer situates himself with regard to that medieval concept.

Then a selection of texts from Chaucer's Legend of Good Women and The Canterbury Tales, among them 'The Merchant's Tale', 'The Man of Law's Tale', 'The Shipman's Tale' and 'The Wife of Bath's Tale', will be discussed as part of this seminar.

Set text:

The Riverside Chaucer, Third Edition (or later), ed. Larry Benson (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1987)

BA 2005 : Students will be assessed by means of active participation and the submission of an essay.
BA 2013 : Group-discussion in class (collective & groups) and writing an essay (individual); possibility of writing an extended essay (plan d'études 2013)
