Objectif
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Critically engage with sociolinguistic literature, particularly on English varieties and their representation
- Lead thoughtful academic discussion
- Understand how dialect representation and standard language ideology intersect
- Design and conduct a linguistic research project
Contenu
This course focuses on how dialects of English are represented in literature and film. Students will be introduced to basic sociolinguistic principles, including language variation and standard language ideology.
Students will examine case studies of different literature and film over the course of the semester. They will also conduct an independent research project to develop their understanding of how dialects are portrayed and which features are used to develop characters, plots, etc.
