This class will introduce students to Robert Macfarlane's The Wild Places, which traces the writer's journey in search of 'wildness' in the British Isles. Over the course of the text, Macfarlane travels to a wide range of locations across Britain and Ireland, carving out his own paths as well as following in the footsteps of those who have lived in, travelled through and written about the same landscapes before him. We will examine Macfarlane's shifting understanding of what makes a place 'wild', whilst also considering how this might help to open up broader debates about humanity's 'place' in the natural world in the contemporary period.

To receive credits for this class, students are expected to attend regularly, actively participate in class discussions, give an in-class presentation of roughly 10 minutes, and to submit an essay of 6-10 pages in length. Students electing to take this class in the 'enseignements complémentaires' module, or Erasmus students, must submit an essay of 8-12 pages in length.

Recommended edition: The Wild Places (London: Granta, 2008).
