This seminar offers a close reading of a variety of twentieth-century Portuguese American short stories. Particular attention will be paid to the form and characteristics of the short story, as well as to its role and function in American literature. This class also discusses questions of genre, narrative and discursive techniques, structures, characterization, plot development, recurring themes, as well as imagery and figurative language. This seminar will also contextualize Portuguese American literature-which has received little attention in the United States-within the broader context of Ethnic American and immigrant literatures to reflect on notions of home, belonging, cultural and generational conflicts, language, memory and identity formation. Discussion of these concerns will also consider the global context of immigration that characterizes our contemporary era.

To validate this seminar, students will be asked to do a close reading of a selected passage (midterm) and write a satisfactory final essay.

To receive credits for this class, students are expected to attend regularly, actively participate in class discussions, give an in-class presentation of roughly 10 minutes, and to submit an essay of 6-10 pages in length. Students electing to take this class in the 'enseignements complémentaires' module, or Erasmus students, must submit an essay of 8-12 pages in length.
