Contenu
In this seminar we will study extracts from Lawman's 'Brut', which relates the story of Britain and its early legendary kings, providing the earliest account in English of the legendary king Arthur. Written around 1200-1250, this text masquerades as "history" but is nuanced by the new and evolving fictional genre, romance. We will explore themes of kingship, villainy and heroism, women, magic and the supernatural.
Evaluation
Students will be required to give a short oral presentation in addition to two written evaluations: a mid-term evaluation, consisting of a close-reading of a passage of one of the extracts, and an end-of-term essay (written in class, c. 1500 words).
