Objectif

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to research paradigms, methodologies, and foundational research theories in public administration. The contents discussed during this introductory course should enable students to perform their own research projects, including the independent identification of a study topic, formulation of research questions and hypotheses, conduct of a literature review as well as the appropriate selection and preparation of (qualitative or quantitative) data collection and analysis strategies.

Contenu

- Session 1: Fundamentals of research in public administration
- Session 2: Theorizing and secondary data collection methods
- Session 3: Research design and qualitative data collection methods
- Session 4: Measurement theory and quantitative data collection methods
- Session 5: Management and visualization of research data
- Session 6: Case studies and qualitative data analysis
- Session 7: Experiments and quantitative data analysis
- Session 8: Writing and reporting research results


Evaluation

Students will write a research proposal (in groups of two) that comprises a problem statement with research questions and/or hypotheses, a goal statement, brief literature review, description of data collection and analysis, as well as a reflection statement. Only submissions in English will qualify for the foreign language credits.

Key readings will be provided on Moodle. Additional books detailing certain aspects of this course are complimentary.
