This seminar invites students to undertake a close reading of Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde (1382-86), his masterwork of love, sex, war, and betrayal. Alongside topics that have typically concerned readers of the poem, such as narrative viewpoint and characterization, we will be interested in exploring Chaucer's figuration of time: what understanding of time's passage is developed in the Troilus, a text saturated with allusions to classical history and literature but whose material setting is curiously redolent of late medieval London? Is it possible to empathize with the stories of bygone heroes and heroines? How should we read historical literature? We will begin with a consideration of Chaucer's sources, in particular Giovanni Boccaccio's Filostrato (late 1330s), before proceeding to study the Middle English text of Troilus and Criseyde in detail. In the last portion of the course, we will reconsider the repercussions of Chaucer's rendition of Troy in two later works: the Testament of Cresseid (before 1492) by the Scottish poet, Robert Henryson, and Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida (1602). This class will appeal to students whose interests cover classical literature and history, historiography/the writing of history, and comparative literary studies.

A final essay of 3,000 words, citing at least four articles or book chapters. Students will be given guidance on essay topics but are free to choose their own topics.
