Contenu
Experts estimate that most of the 6,000 languages spoken in the world today will vanish before the end of this century. With rates of language extinction over the next one hundred years ranging from 50% to 90%, language endangerment is a serious concern, not only for linguists and language planners but for the speakers themselves.
This course will explore the social process and linguistic effects of language death from the perspectives of the community, the scientist, and other stakeholders. Students will learn how and why languages become endangered, thus developing an understanding of the motivations of language shift, the role of language documentation, and the different responses to language endangerment, including revitalisation strategies, the question of standardisation, and the use of technologies.
