This interdisciplinary MA class co-taught with FGSE professor Christian Arnsperger will focus on countercultural thinking and living experiments in the United States. The first part of the course will explore some of the historical instances of critical alternatives to the mainstream - including Transcendentalist and Fourierian experiments, and socialist and other intentional communities from the 19th century to the 1950s's and 60s. The second part of the class will focus on contemporary countercultures, especially those based on generative encounters between environmental, spiritual and social justice longings and practices. Topics explored will include bioregionalism, eco-villages, the role of Native American culture, and neo-tribalism.

Validation will be based on a midterm assignment, a final essay, and an oral presentation.
